While other types of PC hardware have gone through changes over the years, the IDE cable has relatively remained the same. Those who service PC hardware often find them a nuisance, as they obstruct the view of the inner workings of a PC and often need to be removed in order to perform work on other parts of the machine.

The inside of a case that uses IDE ribbon cables

Enthusiasts have known about round IDE cables for years, but if you are just getting into system building and/or overclocking, then round IDE cables will prove to be a welcome treat. The benefits of rounded IDE and floppy cables include:

Freer air flow inside the case

Easier access to internal PC components

Better protection against damage

Artistic value

You can find round IDE cables in all colors

including clear or black

If you have a case with a Plexiglas window, then you definitely don’t want a mess of ribbon cables blocking your chrome-plated RAM modules. That just wouldn’t be right. And if you take your box to a LAN party with IDE ribbon cables, then trust me, you are not going to be able to change the subject when everyone starts calling you noob.

You can even light 'em up

Really, the only disadvantage of the rounded cables is that they are more expensive, and they may be hard to come by in your local retail markets. You can always find deals online, though.
